One of our designers, Jon Paul Duvall (AKA Junk Yard Dog), celebrated his 30th birthday a couple of weeks back. After checking out the festivities that took place in honor of him reaching the big 3-0, I feel pretty sorry for anyone that has to settle for a swashbuckling time at Medieval Times. Here’s JP with the play by play…

R.I.P. Gary Gygax

Posted by Pete on March 4th, 2008

Gary Gygax reportedly passed away today at the age of 69. He was, and still is, a legend. As co-creator of D&D and co-founder of TSR, there probably aren’t many RPGs that haven’t been influenced in some way by Gary and what he started, not to mention his being responsible for Gen Con and the consumption of countless bags of Cheetos and gallons of Mountain Dew. Personally, I have never been able to look at a Crown Royal bag without thinking “dice bag.” I spent my first all-nighter playing a game because of AD&D.

We asked around the team for thoughts on the influence Gary and D&D/AD&D had on them. Here’s what folks had to say:

For those playing Oblivion PS3 that have been waiting for a chance to buy the Shivering Isles expansion (by itself, not as part of GotY), it will be shipping throughout North America beginning today. You can hit the jump below for the full release.

Of note in that release is a this part at the end: “Shivering Isles for PLAYSTATION®3 system will also be available for download on the PLAYSTATION®Network (North American, English only) beginning November 29th.”

So, there’s your confirmation that we finally sorted out how to make it available as a download on PSN and it will be out next Thursday for N. America. We will let you know about availability of Shivering Isles in Europe/Australia/Everywhere else in any format just as soon as we can. It’s just not something I can confirm for you at this time.

If you haven’t downloaded Fighter’s Stronghold yet, what are you waiting for? It’s FREE. Who cares if you’re done playing Oblivion or don’t own it yet - if Santa gets you a copy of Oblivion Game of the Year and you missed out on your chance to get Fighter’s free, well, that, my friends, would be a sad tale I wouldn’t want to wish on anyone.

As always, lots of blood, sweat and tears go into everything we do, and I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the hard working and amazing team we have here, notably the ones made Fighter’s Stronghold happen.

On Friday we released our latest Bethesda Softworks Newsletter. Along with touching on the Fighter’s Stronghold download and the Fallout 1oth Anniversary Contest, we also revealed some new screens for the PS2 and Wii versions of Star Trek: Conquest.

Today, the new screens are available on our Star Trek site. Three of the screens are from the PS2 release of the game. We’ve also got two new Wii screenshots up, including the one shown above, which offers a glimpse at how you can simulate combat within the game.

In other Conquest news, check out new interviews regarding the game on Armchair General and Star Trek Gamers.

New Mods for the The Elder Scrolls

Posted by gstaff on October 12th, 2007

Here’s an update on some mods I saw this week on other sites that caught my eye.

At the Oblivion Files, their highlighted file of the week, “The Lost Spires” by Leo Gura, is a massive addition that advertises 15+ hours of new gameplay. The mod adds an Archeology Guild that you must join to explore “new, exotic locales to unravel a plot of sinister deceit, betrayal, and doom.” Download it here.

At Planet Elder Scrolls, Lingwei has added an interesting mod that expand’s on Oblivion’s The Siren’s Deception quest line again. By downloading the mod, your are granted new options of how to complete the quest without having to kill them. If it sounds like an interesting idea to you, Lingwei is open to folks expanding on the mod. Sounds like someone else is playing the role of a siren and drawing in others. :)

For Morrowind, Darknut has released a new texture replacement mod, Darknut’s Creature Textures Morrowind (see above for an example of the improvement). If you download this, just keep in mind that they replace the existing textures in the game. For more information on the mod, head over here.
