The Beards of Bethesda

Last week at Kotaku, Luke Plunkett saluted the in-game beards of Fallout 3. After reading it, I found it only fitting to pay homage to Beards of the Bethesda Game Studios. Earlier in the year, devs at the office competed in a “beard off” between the months of February and May. Like hockey players refusing to shave during the playoffs, many of our team members were able to fight through the itch and keep the beards on.  While not pictured, I tried to go without shaving for about two weeks, but my scraggly mess was driving me mad.

Anyways, above is the before, and below is the after…

The horror..beyond horror.

Then again it could just be a gathering for the latest D+D convention with hairy outcast dwarves too tall to be dwarves yet strangely are.

You may not notice, but I also abstained from cutting my hair during the Great Bethesda Beard-Off and ended up with a nice ‘fro by the end.

As for the ladies, you’d surprised how many shoulder- and face-slaps you can amass by asking a woman to not shave her beard for five months.

Us womenfolk also participated - we all got haircuts and then didn’t cut our hair again til Beta. As exciting as it was, none of us could compete with Dane’s beard. heh.

@ Fallout3 player, if you look at the official Game Guide, they do a breakdown of the different variables that can affect the ending.

These include 9 different Karmic influences, the race of your character, the sex of your character, as well as different choices you make and their impact. I won’t go into those, as they’re spoilers.

If you have the guide, flip to page 543. If my math is right, it would put you at over 600 permutations of the ending.
