Can Fred Zeleny survive DC?

Always up to something cool, Fred Zeleny is helping organize a pretty cool event called “Survive DC” that’s happening this weekend. No, it’s nothing post-nuclear related, but the name of the event definitely makes you think of Fallout 3.

I’ve been working with a few of my local gamer-friends to organize a local game based on the awesome event called “Journey to the End of the Night.” It’s a free event taking place this Saturday night in and around DC. Various friends have held games of it in Manhattan, Brooklyn, London, Chicago, and San Francisco, generally with attendance between 50 to 200 people, and it’s a great way to meet other weird game players in the area..

The game is best summed up as a combination of a race and a game of tag: groups of players travel between checkpoints located throughout the city, while trying to avoid, outrun, or just hide from seekers who try to tag them between the checkpoints. Anyone who gets tagged joins the seeking side, trying to catch other racing players.

The first player or group of players to complete all of the checkpoints without being tagged wins a prize, but there are all sorts of other prizes for everything ranging from how well people did at each checkpoint’s mini-game to elaborate costuming or amusing cleverness. And, of course, it all culminates at a party after the last checkpoint.

The game will begin in Dupont Circle at 7pm on this Saturday (May 3rd), and players don’t need any equipment apart from whatever they’d want to take with them when sneaking and running for their lives in DC. More information can be found on the website for the event: http://www.survivedc.com.

(And no, I wasn’t responsible for the name “Survive DC,” but I love how appropriate it is, considering that other game I spend my time working on.)

I would have expected a “Hide from the Congressman” kind of thing.

Man, I wish I could do this but there’s no way in hell my parents would condone me running into DC for a game of seek and destroy throughout the city. Next year, when I’m at UMD, I am so in.

It’s not planned as an annual thing, sadly. But then again, who knows what could happen in the future? Maybe you can organize one next year, yourself!

RUN! RUN and pretend its for your lives! Oops sorry didnt mean to give you..the fear.

So… did he survived?
